Five teams have entered the BlackBerry SurfAid Corporate Cup WA - a unique fundraising event for humanitarian organisation SurfAid.

The Corporate Cup will be held this Saturday (24 March) as part of this year’s Telstra Drug Aware Pro, Margaret River.

The teams are: Salty Lawyers, CINEads, Allens Arthur Robinson Surf Team, Team Enviro and the Weekend Wigglers.

A top-class professional will join each team of four surfers to compete against each other to raise much-needed funds for SurfAid.

Former world champions Tom Carroll and Mark Occhilupo, and American Chris Gallagher, who was the first international to win the Margaret River event in 1996, will be competing.

Each team is aiming to raise at least $10,000 for SurfAid and the top fundraising teams in order will be able to choose a pro surfer to join their team.  The teams have raised more than $30,000 so far.

SurfAid supporter Tony van Merwyk, a partner with Freehills law firm, said it was great to see hearts and wallets opening and donating to the teams.

“A big thank you to all who have contributed so far and a call to arms to others who have yet to donate, especially from the corporate community,” van Merwyk said.

“SurfAid is a great ‘bang for your buck’ organisation. Every $10 has a direct impact on the lives of those in need in Indonesia. So every donation, no matter how small, helps and is significant. Now $1,000 …"

The CEO of Surfing WA, Mark Lane, said the newly formed partnership with SurfAid had a great deal of relevance to surfers. “The BlackBerry SurfAid Corporate Cup WA is an example of one of our new initiatives for this year’s event – and BlackBerry is the perfect fit given our alliance with Telstra. We are really excited to see this event roll out alongside the Telstra Drug Aware Pro feature event,” Lane said.
